WHY BECOME A RIDE COORDINATOR?

You get to choose the destinations and routes, the date and time, the ride pace and the food/refreshment stops, things you can share with the other participants of your ride.
- You meet new people who share your interests. This expands your pool of potential riding partners and friends, particularly people who ride the same way you do.
- You can inspire people. Motivate them and get them excited about cycling. Regular coordinators have tales of novice cyclists who have blossomed into avid riders by the end of the season.
- You can exercise your creativity in finding a route, writing the ride description, designing the map or the itinerary, and creating the event.
- You can create theme rides out of interest you might have. Examples in the past have been history rides, winery visits, family rides, moonlight rides, polo and bakery rides.
- You get access to our club’s ridewithgps.com route planner to create maps, get navigation help and keep track of EVCC cycling routes.
- You will be helping the club to fulfil its mission to fulfill the bicycling related recreational, social and educational needs of Calgary cyclists.
- Coordinating a ride makes you go riding yourself!
- And, if you coordinate at least five rides in a season, you get a free membership next year as a token of our appreciation!
What is the role of a ride coordinator?
Staging
- Become familiar with routes; select appropriate rides and classify them by type and degree of difficulty; set dates and times; starting locations and access, special things to bring, availability of washrooms, carpooling if applicable, and refreshment considerations.
- Post rides to the EVCC website following certain conventions, using a template provided or copying a previous ride on the website.
- Send notification emails to the membership one week and then one day before rides.
- Send last minute reminder emails to members already registered for rides, discussing weather and other matters. Cancellation due to inclement weather might be necessary.
During the ride
- Welcome participants and arrange introductions.
- Encourage everybody to follow established Covid-19 rules.
- Remind participants about safety, review the route, record attendance.
- Organize regrouping locations and sweeps as considered necessary.
After the ride
- Encourage participants to visit a local social establishment (follow Covid-19 safety protocols).
- Report any accidents or difficulties to Program Director.
- Cancel the registrations of “no shows”.
- Post a trip report on our website
